Ram Raid Leaves Cougars In Relegation Dogfight

Dewsbury Rams 24-12 Keighley Cougars Match Review by Joshua Chapman (@JRCSport) in Association with A1 Stairlifts.

A dismal first half showing was the catalyst for a defeat at Dewsbury which left the Cougars deep in the relegation mire heading into next week’s final round of fixtures.

The Cougars right flank was the open gates for the Rams as all eighteen of their first half points came as a result as the gaps left and weaknesses shown down that side.

After Richie Barnett was caught out 40/20 with forty seconds played, the rocket man would then leave a bus sized gap in front of Ben Hellewell who walked the ball home in the corner.

In the minutes that followed, Tom Hemingway added a penalty conversion following a Paul Handforth high tackle on Karl Pryce, A Barnett knocked on presented the Rams with a scrum from which Ryan Hepworth managed to break through a tackle to cross the line.

The Rams would grab the final points of the scrappy half when Kieran Hyde collected a Hellewell offload following the Scot’s break before squeezing past James Craven to get over next to the uprights.

With tensions building between the sides and a number of shirt grabbing incidents proving to be the highlights, Danny Jones squeezed over to get the visitors on the scoreboard for the first time in the game, despite the best efforts of Pryce to drag the Welsh international into touch.

Two disallowed tries in the space of a minute proved a talking point when the Rams were denied for a knock over the line and from the Cougars scrum, Jones thought he had his second but for the effort to also be disallowed for a knock on, but this was from a James Haley error in the build up.

Handforth tried in vain to drag Keighley into the game but all chances of a comeback were killed with eight minutes remaining when a clever pass out the tackle by Shane Grady sent Anthony Thackeray racing through an attempted Craven tackle to wrap up the victory.

But, the final say and score would be the Cougars when from dummy half, ‘Tiger’ threw the dummy pass and survived a collar pull from the big man Pryce to squeeze over and make sure Cougars had a valuable bonus point heading into next week’s make or break clash with Featherstone.

Yorkshire Times Man of the Match – Paul Handforth – As tends to be the case with the Cougars poor showings this term, Tiger was the man of the match. His clever kicking and one man missions to drag the side back into games beyond their reach shone through once again.
