Club Statement – Emmerson Whittel

Keighley Cougars are this evening making the following statement in regards to Emmerson Whittel.

As you are all now fully aware, Emmerson sustained a broken jaw in Saturday’s Challenge Cup tie against Fryston Warriors and is out of action for 12 weeks whilst been unable to speak or eat for 6-8 weeks.

We have today discovered that Emmerson will require surgery to re-align and repair his broken jaw and Keighley Cougars would like to wish Emmerson a successful operation and a speedy recovery.

Unfortunately this means as Emmerson is currently a student at the University of Huddersfield, being unable to play Rugby League for the Cougars means he has now lost his only real source of income.

Therefore, the club has today made the decision to raise funds for Emmerson in order to allow him to continue living off the field during his absence on it and this will begin with a bucket collection this Sunday at Cougar Park against the North Wales Crusaders.

In the meantime, we will continue to help the RFL with their ongoing investigation into the unsavoury scenes on Saturday whilst aiding and supporting Emmerson in his recovery.

What an excellent idea , we should all dig deep on Sunday to help one of our own!

  2. Chris says:

Great idea – maybe set up a go find me page or something similar to allow the rest of the rugby world to help out if needed!

  3. Mike Dudley says:

Of course but it should not have to be Cougars club and fans, I would hope and expect that Fryston Club would make a major donation “without prejudice”.
Emmerson should also be eligible for Criminal Injuries Compensation. I hope that charges of assault/GBH are being pursued.
    Best wishes to Emmerson

  4. Sharon Thomas says:

Good decision…we will support him, its only right.

  5. Sandra says:

Excellent idea. Well done cougars. We look after our own.

  6. Geoff Baxter says:

I for one will be contributing. I hope many more Cougar supporters will do the same. There is no room in this sport for shear brutality. Fryston you are a disgrace. For goodness sake, Handforth find another club. You’re better than that.

  7. Daniel says:

This is a fab idea, lads go out and play the sport which they love hoping that something like this doesn’t happen. Unfortunately it seems that tempers flared from both sides on Saturday, having watched from the side lines as a Keighley supporter I was disappointed that both sides lost their heads. We have however seen this before on the field and I’m sure we will see it again. Maybe fryston warriors should follow suit and do the same for their player who sustained a broken cheekbone who I also believe from reading posts online will be undertaking surgery next week and be unable to work for a number of weeks/months with a young family to support. Wishing a speedy recovery to both lads!
