Josh Tonks arrived at Cougar Park in November 2016 to become Craig Lingard’s twelfth signing following his appointment as Head Coach.
A powerful second rower with an eye for the tryline, Tonks joined from the York City Knights as a like for like replacement for Darren Hawkyard who departed the Cougars due to work and family commitments.
During his three years in North Yorkshire with the troubled Knights, Tonks made 57 appearances and crossed the line for 18 tries helping the Knights to the 2014 League One Leaders Shield and the 2016 iPro Sport Cup Final, where they were defeated by the Cougars in Blackpool.
Prior to joining York, Tonks spent 5 and half years at Dewsbury either side of a brief loan spell with the Castleford Tigers.
Arriving in 2009 from amateur outfit Castleford Panthers, Tonks scored 6 tries in 71 appearances as he was a part of the Rams ‘invicibles’ of 2009 which were crowned Championship One Champions after going the entire domestic league season undefeated.
Tonks would play his part further as the Rams became an established Championship outfit under both Warren Jowitt and then Glenn Morrison and spent the early stages of 2010 in Super League with his loan spell at the Tigers.
However, Josh wouldn’t feature in the first team at The Jungle prior to his return to the Rams.
