Survival Sunday Beckons – Featherstone Preview

Keighley Cougars v Featherstone Rovers Match Preview by Joshua Chapman (@JRCSport) in association with A1 Stairlifts.

Defeat at Dewsbury leaves it all to play for on this Survival Sunday as the Cougars welcome Featherstone Rovers for the clubs biggest game in twenty years.

Last weekend’s bonus point defeat would have been enough to secure the club survival had the RFL not reinstated the Batley Bulldogs three point deduction in the lead up to the Rams defeat.

A victory would secure survival and a play-off spot for the side on Sunday, as would a draw against second placed Rovers. However, defeat brings all sorts of complications as a defeat without a bonus point would all but condemn Keighley to relegation.

The Cougars would also be facing the drop if Batley get anything from their fixture away at Doncaster as Whitehaven are expected to pick up the points at already relegated Swinton.

Brendon Rawlins remains the sides only major absentee with Paul March expected to make changes from last week’s seventeen with the likes of Oliver Pursglove, Luke Haigh and Daley Williams all pushing to make the matchday squad.

This crucial fixture also marks Andy Shickell’s last appearance at Cougar Park in the red and green jersey. ‘Shick’ has been a regular for the team for the best part of the last decade, making over 100 appearances, and was part of the 2009 and 2011 Championship One Play Off winning squads.

For the visitors, a draw or victory would guarantee second place and 500k prize money as well as a home tie against either Doncaster or Halifax in the first week of the Championship play offs which begin next weekend.

The Rovers only doubt is winger Jason Crookes who faces a late fitness test for an injury sustained in last week’s 40-28 defeat at home to the Sheffield Eagles.
