The Keighley Cougars can today announce that duo Richie Barnett and Elliot Cosgrove have departed the club to join Kingstone Press Championship newcomers, the Hunslet Hawks.
Richie departs after three season at Cougar Park. The winger, who was suspended from the game for two years in February 2008 after testing positive for a banned substance, has Super League experience with Hull FC, Warrington Wolves and Salford City Reds.
He joined Sheffield Eagles before moving to the Hawks in 2011. He was then snapped up by then Keighley Cougars coach Jason Demetriou in 2012 and has made a total of 60 appearances for the Cougars scoring 30 tries.
Director of Rugby Darren Williams said “When Richie first contacted me about the possibility of returning to the club I said to him it’s something we would consider. He’s improved his game awareness over the last few years and he’s had some game time playing in the centre, so he also gives us some utility options there as well as his favoured wing position. He scores tries as his career to date proves and his ratio of a try every other game is most impressive. What’s really impressed me with Richie was his desire to play at the highest level possible, that’s been his motivation in this move and not financial gain and he’s always stated how much he enjoyed his previous spell with the club.”
Barnett added “I’m happy to be back at Hunslet as I enjoyed my previous time there so I still know alot of the staff & players which will make it easier for me to settle back in. I’m aware it’s going to be a tough challenge next year but with the players & staff currently in place the clubs definitely going in the right direction.”
Elliot departs after just eighteen months at the club following his arrival from Dewsbury Rams in March 2013.
Hunslet director of rugby Darren Williams said: “We’re delighted to add Elliott to our Championship squad for 2015. He’s a very aggressive defender who still has plenty of improvement in him.
“He has recently been playing rugby union for Huddersfield before his call up to the Ireland rugby league squad for the European Championship. He is a centre who can also play in the back row.”
