Halifax RL U20’s 32-30 Keighley Cougars U20’s Match Report by Joshua Chapman (@Chapalar) in association with A1 Stairlifts.
Without a win so far this campaign and lying third bottom of the table, the Cougars under 20’s made the short trip to The Shay to take on mid table Halifax.
Sadly, the result was overshadowed to a dislocation of the ankle suffered after just eighteen minutes by the Cougars captain, Tom Courtney.
The home side took just four minutes to break the deadlock when following a Ben Blackwell knock on, they broke the backline from the scrum to send Ben Barron over in the corner.
The Fax second try came when Jack Holmes broke the line and send the rampaging prop Jamail Hunte in under the posts to open up a ten point gap between the two sides.
Rugby was then put into perspective when with eighteen minutes on the clock, Cougars captain Tom Courtney came out of a collision with Hunte with a dislocation of the ankle.
Following a fifteen minute stoppage following the injury, the game restarted and the Cougars forced a knock on to prevent Hunte getting over for his second try of the evening.
Courtney’s replacement, Luke Robinson, got the Cougars back into the game when he powered over the line through two Halifax tacklers three minutes following the restart of the game.
And Tom’s injury continued to spark the Cougars when from the restart, Louis Hobbs powered in between the sticks to give the visitors a two point lead.
Fax then retook the lead when Jarrad Ward crossed in the corner after a lovely cross field move which started with a Holmes break in the home side’s own half.
The Cougars took a two point lead into the interval when a wild Barron offload was intercepted and touched down in the corner by Chris Watson, followed by a wonderful Stead conversion.
Keighley started the second half with purpose and after keeping an early Shaymen attack at bay, extended the lead further when Chris Unsworth continued his recent run of tryscoring form by scoring in the far corner of the pitch.
The powerhouse prop forward Hunte then raced over under the sticks for his second try of the evening to close the gap between the sides to two points.
Brad Delaney then showed a terrific turn of speed out of the scrum to race through a defensive line gap to score before converting his own try to put the hosts back into the lead.
A third successive try allowed the home side to open up a ten point gap for the second time in the evening as Josh Casey avoided a would be tackler to cross near to the posts.
The Cougars gave themselves a chance at snatching victory when a Stead bomb was picked out of the air and touched down next to the posts by Sean Kelly.
