Sheffield Eagles 16-29 Keighley Cougars Match Report by Joshua Chapman (@Chapalar) in association with A1 Stairlifts.
A dominant second half showing by the Cougars saw them pick up a valuable three points and increase the woes which surrounds the dreadful home form of the champions, Sheffield Eagles.
The Cougars couldn’t have gotten off to a worse possible start if they tried when with just 29 seconds on the clock a lovely Menzie Yere pass out the tackle sent ‘QLT’ racing sixty metres to get the game’s opening score.
But, the visitors turned the game around to take an eight point lead which begun after following a spilled kick by Scott Turner, James Haley took a lovely Olly Pursglove offload before finding a gap to get over the line.
After a Danny Jones penalty following interference in the tackle on Ash Lindsay, Josh Lynam walked through some poor Eagles defending after a lovely passing move by Jones and Paul Handforth.
The half time gap between the sides was narrowed down to four points when Andrew Henderson passed the ball from the ruck directly into the grasps of Duane Straugheir who just managed to squeeze over despite the interests of four Cougar defenders.
Despite this a second half collapse followed which saw Mark Aston left fuming by his side’s performance: “I’m here to coach. At the moment I am not coaching, I am babysitting a group of schoolchildren and it is doing my head in.”
The Cougars got the first score of the second period when after winning an Eagles scrum, James Craven took a Jones pass and took on eleven Eagles shirts before getting down next to the posts.
Cougars inflicted further damage when after a lovely Tiger pass out the tackle, Sean Hesketh dummied round a defender to power over next to the posts. And, Jones added a two pointer from halfway after the restart went out on the full.
Performance Director Paul Royston told the press post match: “Very pleased with that today, we’ve been good in training all week and we set ourselves some clear objectives for today’s game and I’m happy it came to fruition.”
The Eagles did reply with arguably the try of the match after a wonderfully floated kick by Brambani was collected and touched down by Knowles but the bonus point was snatched away by a Danny Jones drop goal moments later.
Yorkshire Times Man of the Match – Richie Barnett – The rocketman put in a wonderful shift to take apart a weak right hand side of the Sheffield Eagles, a try was thoroughly deserved for his efforts. Honourable mentions for Jones and Handforth also.
