Cancer Support Yorkshire Come On Board As Charity Of The Year

Keighley Cougars are delighted to announce that Cancer Support Yorkshire will be our Charity of the Season for the 2017 season.

The partnership begins with immediate effect and the club are looking forward to working alongside the charity in the next twelve months.

Cancer Support Yorkshire originally set up as the cancer support centre in 1988 and provided a counselling service to those affected by cancer.

By 1990 almost 300 patients and carers a year were receiving support and income maintenance had been recognised as a critical issue for many. Action was taken and a dedicated welfare rights advice service was set up as one of the first in the country.

In 1995 they relocated to larger premises in Daisy Bank opposite Bradford Royal Infirmary. A close working relationship with oncology health professionals and local GP’s brought a dramatic increase in referrals for services and by 2005 we had again outgrown our premises.

In 2010 the organisation in response to confusion about its identity launched a new image reflecting its uniqueness, independence and modern responsive image, supporting the raising of funds.

September 2014 saw expansion plans reach fruition with the opening of the new satellite centre in Skipton. This allows Cancer Support Yorkshire to now be able to offer their full range of practical and emotional support to people in Craven, Wharfedale and the surrounding areas as well as the existing Bradford & Airedale district.

The charity to date are seeing over 3500 people per year and still offer key services whilst constantly striving to meet the needs of clients and are working hard through their fundraising drive to ensure that they can continue to build and remain to provide their support and services for the long-term future.

As a part of the new partnership between the club and the charity, Cancer Support Yorkshire will be bucket collecting at games throughout the season and will be offering seminars and support to players, staff and supporters who are being or have been affected by this terrible disease.

The club are delighted to welcome Cancer Support Yorkshire on board at Cougar Park.
